Zhizi Wu’s (Jasminidose) works explore the characteristics of East Asian femininity. She pays attention to a variety of narrative themes such as mother-daughter relationships, intergenerational relationships, sexual repression, sexual presence, demisexuality, and lesbianism. Meanwhile, she researches an indirect and obscure narrative mode. Using mixed media, mainly oil painting, on a blank piece of cotton cloth as a starting point, Zhizi Wu records her memories, avoidance, and evil thoughts. Although she usually expresses accurate scene depictions in paintings, she strives to distort the plots, thus emphasizing a layer of barriers between characters and people, or between the self and the outside world. This “dissociative” narrative attempts to touch the core personality of some East Asian women and their collective trauma which has been kept silent, denied, and abandoned.

Zhizi Wu is not the artist's legal name; her surname comes from her mother.
